Author of interview: Pablo Alarcón.
We wanted to verify how there has gone the process of recording of Stormlord's new material, so we contact the band and very nicely and of detailed form answered us Francesco Bucci, their bass player and lyrics writer.
* We will translate the interview to the Spanish in a few days. Stay alive, stay alert!
-
A lot of time passed between your previous album "Hesperia" and the preparation of the following one. Might you tell us brief the reasons?
We’re not that kind of band who release
an album every two years, this is sadly known to every Stormlord fan
and you can blame our control mania for this.
On one side, we don’t feel obliged to
follow the times of the music business, since this is not our work,
but our strongest passion. On the other side, the kind of music we
play is not very easy to write, and we want every new album to sound
unique and not to be a copycat of what we did in the past.
Talking about personal stuff, between
“Hesperia” and the new album a lot has happened for most of us:
marriages, sons, change of works, change of homes and change of
lifes. Everythings flows, but we’re still
here, still kicking!
2. For
a band like Stormlord that does not live of the music but with a
great long-lived and productive career and an important recognition,
how is it perceived this to be so nearby to enter this select circle
of bands of the first row or (“Top
Bands”),
if I am wrong, of it not being? It is frustrating or is assumed
well?
This is not an issue for us. We feel so
lucky in being on the scene since so many years and still having an
audience that is interested in our music and in our shows.
That’s the main thing for us and we
know that for the new bands out there it’s not easy to be noticed,
even if the quality level is very high.
As I told you before, we’re not willing
to play to be included in some kind of top ten, we just want our
music to be listenend and to wake some emotions in the listeners,
since this is what Stormlord is about.
Our sound and our genre are pretty unique
and not very popular, we always knew that would be very hard for us
to become the next Iron Maiden, especially coming from Italy, but
this was never the point.
"Our sound and our genre are pretty unique and not
very popular. We just want our music to be listenend
and to wake some emotions in the listeners."
3. Which
are the sensations between you after being so much time stopped?
Have you been with other musical or personal projects, without
relation between you? In this case, how has it been the reunion?
Yes, of course most of us had some other
projects going on, especially David Folchitto (drummer) and Riccardo
Studer (keyboard player), and that’s very important because it help
to grow our creativity.
For example, I’m involved in a classic
metal project since the last year and it was very interesting to came
back to a more simple songwriting, discovering once again that kind
of music that I use to love so much when I was younger.
Anyway, we are always in touch with each
other, mainly for the band’s business but we also hang around
together, from time to time, to have a beer or two (or more).
4. These
2 years behind,
where the activity of the band has diminished to some shows but little more, have they been of composition, of necessary rest…?
Tell us, please.
It was a necessary choice. We’ve been
working on this new album since forever, but every time things
started to get serious with the songwriting process, we were
distracted by some live show or stuff like that.
So, the only possible way to finish this
album was to focus only on its making, avoiding every other activity
connected to the band. So we did it, and that’s why we are back.
5. Your battery David Folchitto registered for Fleshgod A. as musical of directly it does rightly now one year, but without leaving Stormlord. I know that you were glad, as artists and companions. Such what has him gone?
5. Your battery David Folchitto registered for Fleshgod A. as musical of directly it does rightly now one year, but without leaving Stormlord. I know that you were glad, as artists and companions. Such what has him gone?
I can’t speak for him, but of course
David is very happy to be part of such a popular band, were he can
improve his drum skill and also experience an higher level of touring
all around the world. We’re very happy that David has been
chosen for this important band, because this is an award to his skill
and his playing. Our relationship with Fleshgod Apocalypse is
excellent, we respect them and they respect us; of course, their live
schedule is way more busy that our, but for David this is not a
problem since he can arrange it.
He was also very involved in the making
of our new album, so we can say that his heart is always near to
Stormlord.
-
In August in when announce on social network the beginning of the new album´s recording, though in May already you were echoing fans' messages that they were asking about the activity of the band (between them, I, ha, ha). How has process passed? Some anecdote or aspect to emphasise?
I’m not sure if I understand the
question, anyway our fans have always be very caring about our career
and, especially in the last time when the bas was quiet, a lot of
them have been asking us about our return.
That was very motivating and important
for us, since we knew that a lot of people was eager to hail the
return of Stormlord, so for us was very important to work as hard as
possibile not to disappoint them.
-
Speaking about social networks, you have added to Instagram. Still there are bands that are not conscious of the importance of being visible in them. Has it cost you? Have you the sufficient time that needs this complex labor? Who or those who are to the post?
No, I haven’t got enough time to do
that. Sadly, I’m the one beyond most of our social network and I’m
obliged to do that because, nowadays, if you have a band you have to
be at least on facebook, Instagram or youtube.
On one side I love this, because it makes
possible for us to get in touch with most of our fans, even people
that live so far away. Back in the time that was not possible, and
you could never chat, like we do every now and then, with people from
Canada or from Japan about your music.
On the other side, most of the bands out
there seems to care only about being popular on the social network,
and that’s pretty sad since they should care about mostly about
playing the best music as possible, and not to act like a fucking
influencer who sell sneakers.
"Talking about the orchestra parts, they sound
awesome! It’s heavy, it’s epic, it’s Extreme Epic
Metal, It´s Stormlord!"
-
Let's speak about the new compositions, can you reveal something of the lyrics, themes of the album, if it´s conceptual, etc? And to instrumental level, will they follow present the orchestral arrangements, the epic and bombastic parts?
I can tell you that the new album will
not be a concept album, like “Hesperia” was, but every song will
speak about a different topic.
I’m still very proud of the work I did
for “Hesperia” and I think that it contains some of the best
lyrics I’ve ever wrote. But it was also an exhausting process and,
in the end I felt caged, because I was obliged to follow only a
single topic.
That’s why this time I’m back to the
good old habits, painting every song with some different words.
Sometime I write about the legends and
the myth of the ancient Rome and the latin world in general, some
other I’m deal with history facts or pure fantasy topics. I think
you’re gonna love it, we’ll talk deeper about this subject when
the album will be released.
Talking about the orchestra parts, they
sound awesome! It’s Extreme Epic Metal at it’s finest. Riccardo’s arrangements are bombastic
yet very elegant. Sometime the orchestra steal the spotlight, and the
whole song sounds like an epic moviescore, some other it leaves room
for the guitars and all the metal side of Stormlord, pounding the
listener with merciless riffs and relentless double bass! It’s
heavy, it’s epic, it’s Stormlord!
-
Have you already definite artwork for this new album? Artist? What can you us advance?
The artwork is still
in the making, I can’t tell you nothing, but I can promise you that
it’ll be awesome because the artist is one of the best on the scene
and we always care a lot about our album covers.
-
And as for the tour, there are plans? Slightly already closed? Will Spain be between the visited countries?
After all these months of silence, we are
eager to unleash out fury on the stage, of course.
We’ll start scheduling the live
activity as soon as the album will be finished and we really hope to
come back in Spain, because the crowd of your country is always on
fire!
So, if there’s some
promoter interested, feel free to keep in touch with us via facebook
or Instagram.
"The crowd of your country is always on fire!"
"The crowd of your country is always on fire!"
-
The topic of the merchand is a little for what always I like to ask, since I belong to the faithful fans who buy of everything. What have you thought? Some special packaging for the Stormlord fans? Some surprise or special edition?
Well, I’m agreat fan of LP’s, so
we’re talking with our label about relasing the new album in vinyl
too. Cristiano is the one in charge for our
merchandsing and I’m pretty sure that he’s thinking about some
great stuff right now! There will be also some news for our past
discography, but I still can’t talk about it since it’s all in
the making and I don’t want our label to be mad at me, hahaha!
-
How do you see the current panorama in Italy and worldwide, this way in general?
Italy, now, has a lot of great bands that
makes excellent music and countless shows all around the world.
The problem is that the whole metal scene
seems to became smaller day after day, and I’m talking about every
country in the world.
The most important bands are leaving the
scene and i can’t see any young band replacing them. Of course,
there’re some very successful “new” acts out there, I’m
thinking about Ghost, Avenged Sevenfol or Five Fingers Death Punch
for example, but there isn’t a new iron maiden, Metallica or
Slayer.
Event the young people, that has always
been the backbone of the heavy metal scene, is loosing interest in
this music because it sounds too old and dusty to their ears. They
found themselves in hip hop, trap, or stuff like that, and i can’t
criticize them.
It’s ok, trends come and go, and it’s
useless to be angry if some kind of music is less popular than it was
in the past.
We play extreme metal with screams and
growls, success and popularity was never our main goal.
We’re still in love with metal music
and we’ll always will be, even when Stormlord will exist no more.
That’s should be enough.
-
How do you see Stormlord in a medium-term future?
-
What plans have you now?
To finish the mix of this goddam album
and to unleash it on all of you! We really hope to have a grat
feedback from our legions, since there’s all our soul in this new
album.
Francesco Bucci, the hard guy of Stormlord.

band replacing them."
